Frequently asked questions
How are these boat listings selected?
We regularly collect the most interesting offers published by brokers and private sellers on the main listing sites, favouring value for money, condition and equipment. Each listing links to the original advert: the sale is agreed directly with the seller.
How do I bring home a boat bought far away?
With a delivery: a professional skipper brings the boat by sea or by canal to your port, records its condition at handover and can take you on board to learn the boat. Each listing shows an estimated cost to several ports and a link to our calculator.
What should I check before buying a used boat?
Hull condition (osmosis, impacts), engine (hours, service invoices, sea trial), rigging on a sailing yacht, electronics and safety gear, paperwork (registration, VAT, CE category). For inland boats, also check draught and air draft against the canals you plan to use. A survey by an independent marine surveyor remains the best guarantee.
Can a barge use every French canal?
No: the Freycinet gauge, which covers most small canals (Burgundy, Centre, Nivernais…), limits boats to 38.50 m long, 5.05 m wide, 1.80 m draught and about 3.50 m air draft. The Canal du Midi is more restrictive (30 m long, low bridges). Every inland listing shows its compatibility.
